Water basin protection
All technological processes of NLMK-Kaluga that involve water consumption are equipped with circulating loops with treatment facilities. All the water contained in these loops is cleaned after use, and returned to the cycle. Fresh water intake happens at the Protva river only to recharge the loops, as water tends to evaporate. Water intake is carried out in a volume not exceeding 3% of the annual volume of the river flow. Discharge of any industrial effluents into water bodies is prohibited.
In order to minimize the involvement of the water from natural sources in the plant there are specially built surface runoff sewage treatment plants, which accumulate and clean all the rain and drain water from the plant. These facilities include settling ponds, equipped with oil catchers, and water treatment station. The purified surface runoff goes to the loop.
